Postmortem: Valley Forge

Fantasy football can be absolutely maddening. No matter how well you draft, how successfully you dip (or dive) into the free agent waters, or how many sage trades you make, your well-constructed and finely tuned team’s probability of taking home the championship is always far from certain. On any given Sunday, your team can fall. And when it does so in the playoffs the end is sudden and harsh.

Worst of all: you can also accomplish all of the above and not even make the playoffs.

So, by way of explication and, yes, an attempt to attain at least a modicum of catharsis, I have decided to perform a postmortem on everyone of my fallen teams. The order they will appear is chronologically from when they were eliminated from postseason contention or their season ended in the playoffs. (After these initial three here’s hoping you don’t hear from me for another few weeks!)

Smartest Move: Drafting Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy in the fourth round.

Dumbest Move: Passing on Jamaal Charles—or even Marshawn Lynch—to draft C.J. Spiller fourth overall.

Best Value: Peyton Manning (second round)

Worst Value: Spiller (first)

Unsung Hero: None. Sadly no one on this squad exceed expectations.  And only Lacy, Manning, and maybe Wes Welker provided what I asked of them.

Trades: One: Fred Jackson for Antonio Gates (11/16)

Transaction Number: 14

Total Money Owed: $78 ($50 entry plus $2 transaction fee)

Turning Point: Falling 106-105 in Week 8 to extend  my losing streak to three. I rebounded with a 94-91 win in Week 9 but then finished the season with three straight losses and a tie. The mojo was gone. I was done.
