Postmortem: Fuzzy Dunlop

Continuing my look at those teams who didn’t quite get it done this season we come to Fuzzy Dunlop. (Anyone get the pop culture reference?) This is a team in one of my favorite leagues. I’m a huge fan of point-per reception and this takes it to a whole new level: for every pass your player catches you get two (two!) points. It’s friggin’ fantastic! And high scoring. Yards are also skewed toward receivers, with 10 yards after the catch earning you one point where it takes 20 rushing yards to receive the same amount. It’s a fun, fun league.

Smartest Move: Sage decisions were far too few and far between. This draft was a mess. Stud PPR running backs kept falling into my lap but then none of them produced like they had previously and how I expected they would. I was happy with the wideouts I drafted (getting legitimate number ones Dwayne Bowe and Torrey Smith plus the highly anticipated Tavon Austin) and thought, despite Yahoo’s strong dissension, I had drafted a pretty solid squad. But since I have to pick one: drafting Russell Wilson in the tenth round was a major steal.

Dumbest Move: Going RB-RB-RB with my first three picks. But that is in retrospect. I had no qualms whatsoever getting such great pass-catching tailbacks with my first three selections during the draft.

Best Value: Danny Woodhead (11th round)

Worst Value: Arian Foster (second).

Unsung Hero: Probably Woodhead. Though sans the now infamous pizza incident, Nate Burleson in this kind of league in the 15th round would have been the steal of the entire draft. The best laid plans. . . .

Trades: None.

Transaction Number: 24

Total Money Owed: $50.

Turning Point: Losing the first four weeks (and then falling the last three) certainly didn’t help matters. But underproduction (my first five picks), injuries (Finley, Burleson) was my principle undoing. Despite all that I did finish sixth in points, so by that numeric measure I did have a playoff quality team.
