Postmortem: GBG

Perhaps it’s a classic case of extraordinary results creating unrealistic expectations. The first three years of AFP All-Stars—named for and still populated by many employees of my former company, the Association for Financial Professionals—were triumphant for the Green Bay Gamblers. Three seasons, three championships. And the fourth campaign ended nearly as well: a loss in the title tilt. So the fact that in the last three years I have failed to even make a championship game—including this season I have finished third, third, and eighth, respectively—there have been rumblings that I’d lost my way, that I no longer enjoy the golden touch. I beg to differ. Despite my lack of recent titles, no one has yet to win more than a single championship. And I am quite proud of my 2013 season.

Choosing seventh in the draft, I managed to snag my top two running backs, first picking LeSean McCoy and then Matt Forte with my second round selection. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady certainly didn’t produce to the level I expected of him but when tight end Rob Gronkowski, a fellow Patriot, were both in the lineup they provided me with exactly the firepower that I hoped. My fifth round pick, Miami Dolphins running back Lamar Miller, disappointed a bit, performing quite well the first half before his production tailed off as the season continued. Interestingly, those were the only real impact players I got from the draft. All the others—Philip Rivers, Steve Smith, Andre Brown, Antonio Gates, and Seattle’s defense—I acquired via free agency.

In the end, I probably finished where I should have: third place after taking second in the regular season. My prediction for next season? My fourth championship. Without a doubt.

Smartest Move: Drafting the stellar stable of running backs, particularly LeSean McCoy and Matt Forte, early on in the draft. They anchored  my team in the entire season.

Dumbest Move: Not investing heavily enough in my wide receiver corps. They were far too inconsistent. And that becomes a problem when you need to start at least three every week.

Best Value: McCoy (first round); he was a pimp all season.

Worst Value: Tavon Austin (sixth)

Unsung Hero: Andre Brown (free agent acquisition on Oct. 24)

Trades: None

Total Money Owed: $22

Turning Point: Losing Gronkowski (again) to injury, this time for the season. In the six weeks he played a full game for my squad he averaged 12.83 points and helped lead the Green Bay Gamblers to a 5-1 mark. I managed to survive losing him in the quarterfinals, but his presence was definitely missed in my Week 15 defeat.
